Imagine two shapes outlined in both red and blue ink, overlapping one another but somewhat offset. Now, look at these two images through a pair of 3D glasses and what you see is one cohesive form, belonging to a three dimensional world all its own. This is just such a world. Collect Call, by artist Ryan Mitchell Boyle, coalesces the worlds of sculptural art and street fashion into one playful and fanciful vision.

This exhibition is a multidisciplinary art show and fashion pop-up which invites you into the unique world of Collect Call created by Boyle. Digital collage illustrations piece together found images of non-textile items into a series of cyber fashion stories. They are included for style but also to reflect his general use of materials not often found in clothing, and emphasize Boyle’s process, a space in which his histories with drawing, sculpture, dance and costume intermingle, one flowing into the next and all players in the final orchestration. Look closely and you will easily identify a beanbag hat or a pair of Ethernet slippers. I contain multitudes, a collaborative video between artists Airin Chapman and Ryan Boyle, is a surrealist take on the internet’s proliferation of disposable daily affirmations and empty platitudes. Equally wry and earnest, the looping video features a hyperbolic, mercurial avatar loosely based on Collect Call’s Ryan Boyle keeping rhythm to no music, but rather to the repetition of Walt Whitman’s famously warm-hearted embrace of the contradictions inherent to personhood.

In this interactive space, we encourage you to casually browse and shop the racks of clothing, climb the step-stool to take a photo in the comic foreground and view the styled mannequins showcasing complete Collect Call looks.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ryan Mitchell Boyle is a sculptor, dancer, and fashion designer. After beginning his career making traditional visual artwork in and for galleries, Boyle joined the band The Miracles Club in 2011. As a member, some notable performances include, Warm Up at MoMA PS1, New York, NY; Time Based Arts Festival (TBA), Portland, OR; and Keep Portland Weird Festival, Gaité Lyrique, Paris, France. This led to creating costumes for tours and music videos which morphed into fashion as it combines Boyle’s sculptural tendencies with his performative ones. From this, Collect Call was born in 2015. A playful fashion label housing one of a kind avant-garde clothing and sculptural accessories. Since starting Collect Call, Boyle has been a collective member of Everywhere Space and sells his one of a kind garments in shops around the world.
